Mammal Mansion

Mammal Mansion
Donna Duerk
Fall - 2006

We were asked to design a house for a mammal based on an architects style. We were required to research our chosen mammal and determine its program needs. We were then to produce a full scale construction of the house on a stand at eye level.

My mammal was the California Myotis, a very small bat. The bat needed only a small niche to sleep in. My architect was Buckminster Fuller. I decided to build a hexagonal bi-pyramid SRO, with openings facing various directions. The combination of rooms are arranged in the form of bat wings, one side at rest the other mid-flight. The wings are perched lightly on a single steel “foot” standing on a triangular bi-pyramid base.
